BED WETTING OR NOCTURNAL ENURESIS.
Bed wetting refers to an involuntary urination during
sleep. Although some adults bed wet, it is common and quite normal in children below the age of 5.
Bedwetting may
occur at any point sometimes the victim dream about themselves unrinating in the toilet, in a field or a dump site but in the real sense they are bed wetting
Occasional bedwetting for children over the age of
5 is not uncommon but if it happens more often
than 2-3 times per month, parents should consult
their pediatrician.
Why does bedwetting occur?
nocturnal enuresis is not planned.
A lot of children
who wet the bed produce more urine at night than
others, some suffer a low level of hormone that
controls how much urine is made during sleep. Others have bladders that just can’t hold a lot.
Children that bed wet don't have the necessary control, and don’t
wake up when their bladders are full, laziness also plays a role; bedwetting victims seem to sleep
more heavily and are mostly reluctant to wake. Thus they’re not able to wake
themselves when they have a full bladder.
There can be medical causes, so it's a good idea
to have a check by your doctor.
Bedwetting often runs in the family: you might
find that dad, mum, an uncle or aunt used to bed wet, and might still have to get up at night to urinate.
Possible solutions.
Reassure your child that bedwetting is normal ,
that there is nothing to be ashamed about, and
that growing out of it is possible. It might help her to
know if someone else in the family used to wet
the bed
1. Try to have your child drink more fluids during
the day, and less at night.
2. Soft drinks that
contain caffeine aren’t a good idea. Reason is that caffeine increases the amount of urine
produced.
3. Remind your child to go to toilet before bedtime.
4. Avoid cold environment while sleeping, reason is that more urine is produced during cold weather unlike warm weather urine are replaced with sweat.
More so, give your child some simple explanations: If bed wetting seems to be causing stress or worries, do what you can to make your child feel better . Let him know it will stop with time.
When children stop wetting,
their self-confidence usually returns.
Some parents find it helpful to take their child to the toilet two or three hours after the child goes to sleep.
